A very mediocre film with just above average music is winning awards after awards, and obviously this is insane and more than the hand of god ought be in this.
In a country where any winner is idolized and put on a pedestal worthy for gods, at least till the hype lasts, it would not be politically wise to take a dig. That too if the winner is a Tamilian then any one from this part of the world ought to loose his democratic rights for otherwise, it would be viewed as worst as Blasphemy. So for safety sake let me start by writing my mind- For being a fellow Indian and that too from my part of the nation, speaking the same tongue, I am happy of sorts that he is winning again and again, but sad that it is for the wrong song and even worst a wrong film. The film after the Oscars was released multilingual in India and it wasn't a dream ride. With most seats empty, the distributors though were not pushed to the slums perhaps lost some millions, even if not money, the hearts. If this was a local production, and screened and released as any other bolywood film, the film and the song would not have won even plastic cups.
The hype and the mood at the right recession time gave a grand opening in the Oscars. And from then on, probably all other awards were respecting the Oscars and their decision making. And now after more than a year if the hype still continues and if it is still winning awards then it is probably just a reminder call.
We saw a very confident Rahman in the Grammy's who seemed to know what was coming[ he seemed he knew it even in Oscars], should use it for establishing his foothold in the west. He is right now not even playing music for Boyle's next film.
I remember the day when i was stunned after listening to the music of Roja. The whole state and beyond knew that a genius has arrived. And then many scores worthy of his genius occurred in the same year or the next. But after that somehow it all sound very familiar and same to my ears. Hope all western tunes don't resemble Jai ho for long.
As long as there is a slum to show, the west will buy it for millions. It is a pity that for a whole year they had no tunes which could win the hearts better than that from the slum. Now how do they keep the memory for the next year? Probably give Rahman a life time award?

Same? Are u still living in 1993? delhi 6, kannathil muthamittal, iruvar pondra padalgal kettadhillaya? One has to understand that these are awards given for releases in a particular year. Why do u need to have problems with some one winning awards for the same song? U may consider it average, but the person who decides doesn't. Idhe ilayarajavukku kuduthurundha ore pugazharam sootiruppengele? I am follower of ur site and have been seeing a lot of level headed stuff. This one is very unfortunate comment. Very unfortunate. What is the similarity between roja, iruvar, sillunu oru kaadhal, vinnaithaandi varuvaya, for e.g? Very unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting much severe caustic comment to start with and i am very sure it is on the way.
ReplyDeleteThe idea is to provoke you to highlight his best, lest we forget now that he is getting awards after award for a relativel ediocre song.
I accept each song you mentioned are very good and better. Anyway regrets if I hve hurt him or you by my opinion.
hey, u have not hurt me in any way. I wa only trying to point out that one has to cross over in true sense to appeal to the grammy/oscar sensibilities. I was only saying that u have been a bit harsh on him. From a purely musical sense, for us Indians who have grown up on his music, I understand that "Jai Ho" doesn't have anything as musica, as say, the Bombay theme, for example.
ReplyDeleteIt is not for nothing that he has got so much recognition n awards, isn't it? And his humility and grace are for all of us to emulate.
Thanx for posting the comment and keep the good work going!
India's poverty story is again under the Oscar scanner with US director Gregg Helvey's Hindi film "Kavi" about child labour being nominated in the short film (live action) category.
ReplyDeleteLast year, the India story was projected through three films -- "Slumdog Millionaire", the rags to riches story of a slum boy, and two documentaries "The Final Inch" and "Smile Pinki".
While the "The Final Inch" was about health workers travelling throughout Uttar Pradesh, urging parents to get their children vaccinated against polio, "Smile Pinki" focused on a girl whose cleft lip made her a social outcast till her life changed after a meeting with a social worker.
In an earlier era, veteran Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray, who was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Academy Award, was criticised by actress Nargis for "selling Indian poverty abroad to win awards". more in http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/story.aspx?Title=Indias+poverty+story+under+Oscar+scanner+again&artid=DvRBS3vH/kw=&SectionID=1cjn2aDoBOM=&MainSectionID=1cjn2aDoBOM=&SectionName=aG2z%7Cca8jQw=&SEO=
Ever heard of slumdog racism. My very clear doubts are that that movie is also a culprit for racism in Australia and similar.
ReplyDeleteSee what appeared in press of Australia in Feb 2009.
"The India of Slumdog Millionaire is an India of violence, gansters, whores, beggers, and evil. The only redeeming character is Jamil, who stands in sharp contrast to the evil, one-dimensional characters who inhabit the rest of the film" - posted in 7/2/2009 in a blog.
Comments in the same blog, many very rational.
"Maybe it’s showing some things that Indians might be ashamed of"
"Some may feel that Slumdog Millionaire is an example of cultural-appropriation or Hollywood exploiting Bollywood"
"The film is laden with the common stereotypes and misconceptions about India, and will not further Western understanding of this country"
And last but not the least there is a big market to be tapped in India and how is it to start by appeasing the recognition starved Indians, Just throw awards at them and They would open more... The last time they tried it successfully was for fashion by electing "miss" for the world and universe for some years toll they found another market.
