In 2003, DMK and MDMK, then NDA allies announced boycott of Sattankulam by election when Jayalalitha was the CM. the reason given by DMK then was the the Centre’s disinvestment policy, while the actual reason was DMK has made it's mind to ditch BJP and switch over to Congress camp. the game plan was to covertly support Congress[ thus ensuring defeat of AIADMK] and put BJP in a corner. If they contest they will come a poor third and if they don't it will be a loss of face. MDMK boycotted because Vaiko was arrested by Jayalalitha and BJP led NDA of which MDMK was a partner could do nothing about it. In the earlier poll BJP had lost to TMC by a small margin. This was a DMK revenge on BJP for it had earlier remained neutral in Vanniyampadi and supported MDMK in Saidapet Bypoll, thus creating division between NDA partners. Thus Sattankulam was a tactical retreat by DMK, and hence has no parallels to the present boycott call by main Opposition Parties of Tamilnadu.
Gorkha national Liberation front and Hurriyat have boycotted polls earlier, even these have no parallels with the present boycott call.
So this is an unparalleled call for the first time by a registered party against malpractices which is a serious charge.
Even though the Boycott call is there and may be more parties may join the Boycott there is all chances of MONEY FLOWING AND SIMILAR TREND AS T. MANGALAM FOLLOWED , JUST TO KEEP THE POLLING PERCENTAGE HIGH.
MEANWHILE THE EC HAS ANNOUNCED THAT NEW MACHINES WILL BE ORDERED FOR THE BY POLLS - IS IT AN ADMISSION THAT OLD MACHINES ARE SUSPECTS OR IS A NEW 'FIX' BEING TESTED IN THE TN SCIENTIFIC LABORATORY. If the nation keeps mum on this it will be a joke on our democracy and the mar on our election process will be complete. It is a national shame as akin to citizens enmasse deciding to return the Ration cards to the Government.

What to expect when the leader of the opposition becomes tired after taking rest.I don't know how she is called a mass leader if you take rest and do politics by giving statements?Its not DMK winning elections its ADMK helping DMK winning elections.Forget bypoll boycott.There are more serious things happening.MLA's demanding land in chennai and getting salary of 50000 for doing nothing but shout and put jaldra for their leaders.I don't think this shall continue.The television media is controlled by the family and the CM shamelessly admits he calls newspaper editors to threaten to stop ads if they publish any wrong news.The blogs are invariably threatened by Supreme court's judgement. There was a news that A.Raja was fined Rs.10000 for foisting case against Junior Vikatan.I don't know how many newspapers carried that news.Toor dhall costs as much as Rs.80 kg and if it it is questioned to the chief minister he would say thats why we have given insurance to people.I think the new insurance is going to be the biggest scam of all time.
