First an article comes in TOI on 13th June which proclaims that Coffee might make you forgetful citing a "recent research as appeared in a BBC news portal". Then to supplement it an article in Chennai times yesterday refers the research and makes a solid pitch against the habit.
FIRST, THE SO CALLED RECENT SURVEY IS AS OLD AS 20 JULY 2004 AND SUBSEQUENT SURVEYS HAVE POOH POOHED THEIR RESULT.
WHILE THE BRITISH TV CLAIMED THAT "Caffeine made it harder for people to find a word that they already knew - the "tip-of-the-tongue" phenomenon", A YEAR LATER Scientists at the Innsbruck Medical University discovered that 100 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of two cups of coffee, increased activity in the part of the brain that is responsible for short-term memory, and improved performance on a test that measures memory function.
During the experiments, researchers noted that the caffeine's effect on memory diminishes after about 45 minutes.
A RESEARCH IN 2007 REVEALED THAT Drinking more than three cups of coffee a day helped protect older women against some age-related memory decline, French researchers said, giving women more reason to love the world's most popular stimulant. Men did not enjoy the same benefit

Coffee helps to improve alertness, attention and wakefulness and by that means it facilitates relevant learning. When the study is tedious, boring and not motivating, coffee helps to give you the energy to study and to make the best of it. The caffeine in your cup of coffee helps you process the information from your study books and the lessons you follow.
Coffee also helps with Short Term Memory so a valuable adjunct during revision periods. Drinking coffee will also help to focus your attention to the main task, when there are many things around needing your attention

Although coffee is one of the most heavily researched commodities and studies have spanned decades, there is still much controversy surrounding its ill effects, or lack thereof, on health. Study after study is performed -often with conflicting results--and it seems there is always a new study out to discount the last one. With that said, coffee is clearly not the healthiest liquid to drink--the best choice is pure water--but coffee and caffeine are far less dangerous than fruit juice or soda. |

IN CHENNAI'S CONTEXT, WHILE CHENNAITIES ARE CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BRILLIANT RACES IN THE PLANET, IT IS A FACT THAT THEY PERFORM BADLY IN QUIZ COMPETITIONS WHEN PROBABLY THEY FACE THE TIP IN THE TONGUE SYNDROME. THE BBC REASEARCH OF 2004, WHICH TOI QUOTES MENTIONS THE FOLLOWING
"In some conditions caffeine helps short-term memory and in others it makes it worse.
"It aids short-term memory when the information to be recalled is related to the current train of thought but hinders short-term memory when it is unrelated
"If the word is unrelated then caffeine is still strengthening retrieval in the same way, but because it is unrelated to the word you want to find it is actually having a negative effect,"
This may be true but there are other positives too.
