What value is a resolution passed in an assembly 'ordering' a centre to do something? On November 12th 2008,the Tamilnadu Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging India to press for talks between the Tamil Tigers and Colombo and also an immediate truce in Srilanka.
"The request of the Tamils is based on the necessity for their peaceful existence inSri Lanka that should be translated into reality,” Karunanidhi said.
"Let us bury our differences, stand united to press for the unanimous wish of Tamils the world over for an immediate ceasefire to end the hardship of their brethren in Sri Lanka,” he added.
“This house demands the immediate halt of military operations and start (of) political, peaceful negotiations to find a solution to the Tamil question,” it said.
What followed after this resolution is history now and it proved how irrelevant the MLA's are in national decision making.
[* A case for Cauvery was filed in Supreme court in 1970 after a resolution to that effect was passed in Tamilnadu assembly. The case was later withdrawn by DMk, due to presure from Congress center then. ]
Normally Once bitten twice shy, but here in Tamilnadu within a year the CM tries to adopt the same eyewash, now for a katchatheevu. This is clearly to score brownie points by teasing the Opposition to become unanimous and trying to plant an alibi for any future black face on the Theevu, he is trying for a resolution, it is clear.
WHAT IS REQUIRED IS A RESOLUTE STAND SIMILAR TO WHAT HE TOOK WHEN HE DEMANDED PORTFOLIO'S AND BERTH'S AND GOT IT WITH SUCH EASE. HE KNOWS IT BUT STILL DOES NOT DO IT JUST BECAUSE HE IS NOT CONVINCED THAT KATHCHATHEEVU IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT ISSUE AS LIKE THE BERTHS.
That the party thinks their people are nothing but nitwits who can be fooled easily by some cheap lures before elections which can later be denied is evident by the Transport Minister 's claim in the Assembly that the Bus tickets were reduced by the Transport corporations and investigation is on and hence no reduction feasible now. It is akin to telling that my daughter's wedding was announced by my PA and hence invalid.
If writing letters, sending fax and passing resolutions is all the action possible by the leaders, they might as well sit idle and at least save us some face. In many cases it is their inaction which has yielded positive results rather than their actions. Assembly should only be like a darbar, used for singing praises of the kings and the prince and then if time permits to announce doles and discuss uliyum oliyum.
That they have no role or intent to influence the life's of Tamils in and outside this country is evident from the happenings in near past and so be it. It is better to be in the hands of destiny and fate , rather than ...
