In an industry where whispers of casting couch and exploitation of women abound, a girl threw caution to the wind while chasing her dream of becoming a compere.
Priya, an 18-year-old college student, however, managed to keep her wits about and escaped the clutches of her molesters.
Priya had met a producer-cum-compere, Gopinath, of a TV channel during his roadshow recently.
She fell for the bait when Gopinath called her on Saturday evening to a club on East Coast Road. Shooting was on at the club, he allegedly told her, and also said that she would have to take a make-up test at the spot if she wanted to become a compere.
Priya went to the club alone and this is where she faltered. She was directed to report to room number 203, allegedly by a couple of staff at the club.
When Priya reached the room, she did not find cameras or spot boys. Instead, she saw some liquor bottles and a man in the room - who was later identified as Kamaraj, Gopinath’s friend.
In the complaint she later filed with the Neelangarai police, Priya said that Gopinath and Kamaraj pounced on her and tried to molest her.
She somehow managed to free herself and ran to the club staff to alert them.
The staff, Satish and Kumaravel, advised her to act according to Gopinath’s wishes, Priya alleged. She then got a complaint lodged, after which all four were arrested.

The news was reported by New Indian Express in Front page. It was also carried by Hindu in regional columns. The news was carried by UNI. Dinamalar has this news item. It says Gopinath is a makkal Tv producer.[so it is not Neeya Naana gopinath?] All news make it seem it is Neeya naana fame Gopinath, because he is the most popular compere. But it is not him. Police have told he is producer in Makkal Tv. Then why mention Populor Tv compere without mentioning his associations. This is injustice to the other Gopinath. Even if it was him this news item sounds very politically coloured.
Normally casting couch is prevalent in kolywood just like anywhere else. But most without public knowledge. Shakti Kapoor, A popular Hindi movie Villain was embroiled in controversy in 2005, when during a sting operation he solicited sexual favors from a television reporter posing as an aspiring Bollywood actress. The incident caused the actor to be ostracized for a short period of time, but then the public got over it He was embarrassed for a while but overall it was a publicity useful to him and he later also was a judge of a popular comedy show.
Neelankarai and the ECR hosts many clubs and farm houses.Many are controversial and some were even caught for illegal dance shows and parties. But most of them have powerful connections and generally the cases are dead soon. Even in this case if Gopinath was associated with any of the ruling party channel may be this would not be news for public. Also a girl going alone to a club for screen testing in Neelankarai is slightly unimaginable. And then coming out unscathed and then complaining looks even more indigestible. Police taking swift action and giving all names to news paper sounds apolitical. We all know how Maran claimed on Febraury 15Th that many SCV operators were arrested midnight and were black mailed to switch over. Is this any such initiative?
Most probably this news will die soon after some compromise and will go to archives sooner than our expectation.
Ya Neeya Naana Gopinatha is a gentle man. No chance atleast to think as bad about him.Because he is not only a copere but a very genuine Journalist also.

ReplyDeleteOf many Tamil comperes, I do like the way you compere the program Neeya Naana as the best.But, many times, what you also give as FINAL OUTCOME OF THE PROGRAM - is what you feel - rather than a synthesis of what both sides say and what the experts say. Some more balanced synthesis is needed.
Some popular,untested suppositions also need to be avoided in such programs. Like-
(i)Today's youngsters are better and more knowledgeable than the older generation. No Sir, youngsters know more physics, more chemistry etc, but know much less about life and about themselves.
(ii) Women are better than men or vice versa. Both ideas are wrong. The fact is - women and men are made as complements of each other and not as competitors.Their roles in many spheres are guided by biological, psychological and emotional differences.How to hormonise their roles for the best benefit of both is to be seen. I know you can do it - if only you try to achieve that Goal.
(iii) Spirituality is the LEAST UNDERSTOOD topic for most people - including Gopinath (Your self,my dear sir).So, please, please do not show only the dark side of pseudo swamijis and conclude what spirituality is. It is the greatest science of India and has nothing much to do with super natural powers, occult practices etc. It is about KNOWING YOUR OWN SELF. Until you can sit for half an hour calmly, peacefully,exploring only your self (and nothing else), you cannot even come to the fringe of your self. There are FAKE SWAMIJIS.True. There were numerous FAKE DOCTORS in my town till recently. But, do we stop going to Doctors because of that.Likewise, until you select a good guru and sit with him for at least 6 months, you can never really know what spirituality is all about. Sir, you need that. You need not go to the most famous of them. Please enquire well, take number of opinions and select for your self. Since you are in Chennai, I can suggest Sri Paramarthananda (vedanthavidhyarthisangha.org).But, it is tough to sit through his one hour classes daily for six months. Do it. you will understand spirituality better. There are better people also in the Himalayas etc.

I have participated in one of the show hosted by him and he his not great as you say. He might have acquired great knowledge but has got his high fundas. If you just hail by watching few of his shows then I see you all are morons.
If he is great to that extend as hailed by few hundreds of you then why not he practice those things which he criticizes?

hello gopi sir. i used to watch neeya naana regularly. i just have a small request for you.In many shows you have spoken about the difficulties of the IT profession. But the wonder is many r forgetting the difficulties of the people who r in medical field.(esp nurses in India).Even in this developing world our salary wages have never improved .And there is no one to look forward regarding this. The hospitals are ready to Extract work from us but not ready to pay us. Atleast u can talk about us right.I hope if u talk people will come to know about us for one day.
