Two uniforms occupied headlines today. One about our Kiran Bedi and the other obviously about Musharaf. He is expected to become civilized from tomorrow. And will he wont he are always asked till he, as usual. For him life is not changing except for his dress, atleast for now. But Kiran bedi the most talked about cop of India has decided to take a new path, three years before schedule. She is taking voluntary retirement and this probably is the only feasible way for her to mark her protest against an ungrateful profession.
"This is the time to grow academically and take up more social responsibilities which are waiting for me. In fact, they need greater attention now. And it's raising your own challenge because you are throwing off security, you are throwing off status quo and you are starting afresh. So that's a newer challenge which I am personally taking," she said while announcing her sudden decision.
She came through with flying colors in some very difficult assignments. As the traffic police chief, she towed away former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's car and she excelled as the head of Asia's largest prison, Tihar Jail. She introduced yoga, vocational training and for all those innovations was the recipient of the Magsaysay Award in 1994. Her colleagues cannot but admire her dynamism and spirit.
Her media friendliness went against her when the Government decided to bypass her while appointing Delhi police commissioner. And there is nothing more special left for her in the profession.
We wish her well and hope she keeps contributing and hope she gets more accolades, which she richly deserves.
